What is a Panchakarma Retreat?

Panchakarma retreat is a special Ayurvedic Cleansing and Rejuvenation program, which should only be undertaken with an experienced qualified Ayurvedic Physician.

Our body regularly accumulates toxins, which are primarily caused by stress due to the everyday demands of life. Cleansing can play a major role in bringing balance back to the body and mind when experiencing issues such as poor digestion, disturbed sleep, weight gain or loss, hormonal imbalances including strong fluctuating moods, irregular cycles, difficulty in conceiving, menopause symptoms, anxiety or depression.

Each day during the retreat you will receive consultations and Ayurvedic treatments, enjoy easy-to-digest nourishing meals, learn the key yogic methodologies for purification and relaxation, and take deep rest.

I have never felt so cared for and taken care of. I felt quite hopeless regarding my health before arriving and I am leaving with tears of joy. To be seen, heard, comforted, taken care of, and on the path to a healthier body, mind, and soul is overwhelming in the best way possible. Ciara

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ayurveda?

Indigenous to India, where it is widely practiced, Ayurveda is a natural, time-tested health system that is focused on disease prevention by balancing the body, mind, and spirit.

Every person has a distinct balance of Vata (space and air), Pitta (fire and water), and Kapha (earth and water), otherwise known as the Doshas. When a person’s Doshas are out of balance they are more susceptible to disease and distress.

Ancient Ayurvedic wisdom provides guidance on how to live according to your Dosha, and treat imbalances, through diet, exercise, daily rituals, social interaction, and other lifestyle factors. Ayurveda’s healing modalities include detox (Panchakarma), massages and treatments, and herbal medicine.

Learn about the facts of Ayurveda

Is Ayurveda an evidence-based science?

The ancient wisdom of Ayurveda is based on time-tested theories that have been proven through observation, trial and error, and experimentation.

Ayurveda is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the world’s oldest comprehensive healthcare system.

Research conducted at reputable Ayurvedic institutes is registered in the clinical trial registry, which is a single platform for all fields of medicine. Clinical research is being published in recognized medical journals worldwide. Ayurveda has also employed modern research methodology to prove its effectiveness. Pharmacognosy, pharmaceutical, and pharmacological studies are being conducted alongside clinical trials.

Ayurvedic pharmacological companies in India are closely scrutinized to maintain the standards of their medicines and are awarded ‘good manufacturing practices’ certificates. They are also encouraged to conduct and register clinical trials.

What do I need to know before planning my Panchakarma?
  • If you are planning to travel in addition to doing a Panchakarma (PK), we recommend that you do so beforehand. The deep cleansing technique triggers the body’s innate healing process which does not stop on the last day of treatment. Therefore, it is really important not to go traveling afterward but to ease your way back into your activities. The slow-down or recovery phase we advise is equivalent to the number of days of your PK. For example, if you have done ten days allow at least a ten-day recovery phase for the body and mind. Not always easy to do, but try!
  • We offer authentic PK. Ayurveda tells us to get plenty of rest, keep warm, and protect ourselves from excessive sunlight and wind. Therefore avoid sunbathing, swimming, going into Ubud to shop, or undertaking excursions during your PK. Observe your thoughts and experiences and travel inwards instead. Doing a PK is giving the self ‘me time, it is a gift of rejuvenation to the body, mind, and soul that we all so deserve.
  • It is good to start preparing yourself also physically for the Panchakarma.
    Our doctors recommend to
    • eat only vegetarian food for 2-3 days before (or longer) you start your trip
    • cut down on smoking and alcohol (if applies)
    • cut down on coffee, sugar, soft drinks, and junk food
    • get some rest and stay warm on the plane
Will I be fasting during my stay?

Food is an important part of Panchakarma and your meals will be well-balanced according to the guidelines of Ayurveda. In general, you will enjoy three delicious meals daily, healthy and balanced for you. On the detox day(s), you will have a special diet with little food to make sure you get the maximum benefits from the detox.

I am pregnant – can I still join a Panchakarma?
It is possible for expecting mothers to do a Panchakarma, the program will be customized and there will be no detox scheduled during the program.
What will a typical day be like during my Panchakarma?

As each person’s experience will be different, the daily schedules will vary. But to give you an idea of what your day could look like during your  Panchakarma, here is a short outline:

Wake up early to the sounds of a gong before receiving your medicines. Do yoga and meditation in the beautiful yoga hall overlooking the rice fields or just relax on your terrace or in the gardens, taking a morning walk.

After that, it is time for breakfast before you meet with our physician and starts your daily treatments in the Panchakarma treatment center. The duration and number of the daily  treatments will vary, depending on the stage you are at.

You may join the cooking demonstration and get some tips and tricks to take home with you. After lunch, you will have free time to yourself in which to relax before your scheduled treatments. Early evening, there will be a meditation class and then it is time to enjoy dinner. Some days, there will be talks on interesting topics or guided rice field walks.
